Mark MacKinnon's Bio

ARTIST STATEMENT -

The degree of good that one gets from the ever present landscape depends on two things.

First, the keenness of one's perception of the beautiful qualities in landscape. Second, the physical qualities of the landscape itself, qualities which depend largely upon the doings of man, as woodsman, farmer, gardener, builder, or controller of the materials and forces of nature.  For the appearance of the land and the objects upon it generally results from the control which man himself exerts over the materials and forces of nature just as truly and as completely as the sculptor controls the appearance of the natural stone which he shapes. There is not one of us who is not responsible in some degree for making or marring the landscape of our world. Whenever this human control over the land and the objects upon it is influenced by desire to make the resulting landscape more enjoyable than it would otherwise be, an element of artistry enters, which often attains the quality of a Fine Art.

STUDIO

My studio is located in the Hudson Valley, New York; about 70 miles north of NYC., in Wappingers Falls, NY. The studio is 1800 sq ft., with 20' ceilings, offices and gallery space in front, and production area with warehouse doors in the rear. I've been traveling the country exhibiting in art shows since 2009, after a career in advertising and commercial photography. I'm a past National Board member, and NY Board member of APA (American Photographic Artists - was Advertising Photographers of America). I have a degree in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego (UCSD), and show my work through galleries and retail stores in London, New York, New Jersey and Chicago, as well as participate in many of the top juried art festivals around the country.

PROCESS

My photographs are printed on 100% cotton rag archival papers. I print with a 12 color pigment inkset on a Canon ipf9400 60" wide with pigment inks, rated not to show any fading for over 100 years. The work is shot with a Hasselblad HD3Dll medium format camera; or the new addition to my camera repertoire includes a Sony A7rII 42mp.  The photograph is then mounted on aluminum under museum quality reflection control glass, or larger sizes with acrylic and floated away from the glass with spacers. The frames are  powder coated welded seamless aluminum custom made here in the USA. All printing and framing is executed and produced in my New York studio. Shipped work may include acrylic glazing to keep breakage down to a minimum.

It's now possible to produce work upwards of 60" x 60" and 60" x 90", all in-house, with the addition of the 60" Canon printer, and roller lamination machine which mounts the work onto aluminum material. (a 3mm aluminum skin ultra smooth and ridged archival surface.)
